July 2018 MCQSC Update: Our Cause and MCQSC Make National News This Week

Montgomery County Quiet Skies leaders Anne Hollander and Janelle Wright attended the June meeting of the NextGen Advisory Committee (NAC), a high-level committee of government, industry and association executives established by the Department of Transportation to advice the Federal Aviation Administration.

Speaking on behalf of MCQSC, Hollander said “It is not an overstatement to say that the implementation of NextGen has devastated the lives of residents in our communities. People under channelized flight paths are no longer able to go about their daily lives in peace. They suffer from sleep deprivation, loss of ability to concentrate, increased anxiety, inability to work in their own homes, damage to their health from both the relentless noise and the emissions, and damage to the most important economic asset they own: their homes.”

In her presentation she requested more community representation on the NAC and establish a national forum for addressing community impacts. She also recommended the NAC make recommendations on noise, not commission more studies and examine current metrics used to ascertain whether noise causes significant impacts; and recommending that flight procedure designers be trained to consider noise. Her remarks were quoted in the June 28 issue of Airport Noise Report in an article titled, NAC Chair Says Community Engagement is No. 1 Priority for PBN Implementation.  Anne's statement also was quoted in a June 27 Aviation Daily article about the meeting.

OTHER AIRPLANE NOISE NEWS COVERAGE

Affluent - and Angry - Homeowners Raise Ruckus over Roar of Overhead Planes was published July 5 in the Wall Street Journal.  https://apple.news/ AoZSZjTxGT9KJthictkn1VA.  It's unfortunate that "affluent" is the leading adjective because as we all know, this issue affects people in all walks of life.  However, our communities must be collectively doing something right to get an article in the national press!

Hope to see you all at the upcoming MCQSC meeting on July 12th at 7:30 (newcomers orientation at 7:00).  Remember we will be at a different location: 9501 Beman Woods Way, Potomac MD.
