CAAN History

CAAN Inc. was started in 1967 by a group of activists in local civic associations that were being severely affected by jet noise from National Airport. Over time these activists formed a coalition from the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. It represented at one time 67 civic associations. CAAN published monthly newsletters to inform its member organizations and rallied citizens to meetings on issues requiring full coalition action, one being the redevelopment of National Airport.

In 1987, CAAN incorporated in Maryland as a 501(c)3 organization. Then when the Internet arrived, CAAN created one of the early websites (1997) dealing with the subject of aircraft noise at National Airport and Dulles International Airport. Its information not only reached its members, but anybody around the world that was interested in the effects of aircraft noise and its air pollution. Google’s browser listed it for many years on page one for aircraft noise.
